Transportation stands as a pivotal element of the European single market, fostering cohesion and economic growth. Yet, with over a quarter of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions originating from this sector, urgent decarbonization is needed.

This first paper, of two, focuses on road mobility, examining key EU policies such as the 2020 Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, CO2 emission standards, Euro 7 regulation, and the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation. It unravels the challenges and opportunities in transitioning to sustainable road mobility, including the slowdown in electric vehicle adoption.

This paper provides a concise overview, navigating the intricate landscape of EU policies, outlining the path toward a sustainable and low-carbon road mobility future in Europe.
